Funded PhD Research Studentship at the University of Surrey - ESRC South East Doctoral Training Centre‘Starting-up, Not Slowing Down’: Social Entrepreneurs in an Ageing SocietyThe studentship will cover tuition fees, and provide maintenance for a total of up to £14,476 pa*. There will also be an opportunity to undertake paid demonstrating duties.Starting October 2013, this competitive three-year PhD studentship at the Surrey Business School will focus on social entrepreneurs in an ageing society. The research project will address key issues of ageing and social equality by focussing on social entrepreneurship and social enterprise activity by the over 50s as ‘later life’ social entrepreneurs. The study will break new ground by advancing academic and empirical knowledge in the emerging field of social entrepreneurship research, as well as related academic fields including research into ageing and social policy. The research will seek to examine why older people become social entrepreneurs later in life and their motivations. It will look at the circumstances and career path of older people who have made the decision to set up a social venture, the challenges they face, and how they can be best supported to face these challenges and succeed as social entrepreneurs. It will also explore how other ‘later-life’ entrepreneurs can be encouraged to embrace social entrepreneurship activities. The studentship is a traditional CASE-style award co-funded by the ESRC SEDTC (South East Doctoral Training Centre) and the Surrey Business School in collaboration with UnLtd (The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs). We are looking to recruit an exceptional student with outstanding research potential and enthusiasm. Successful candidates will normally have a good first degree (minimum upper second) and have or expect to be awarded a good Masters degree in Business, Management or related discipline in the social sciences. Under the research supervision of Dr. MariaLaura Di Domenico and Prof. Mark Saunders, as well as non-academic supervisors at UnLtd, this will be a structured programme of scholarly research leading to a thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge and is of a standard appropriate for publication in high-quality refereed journals. The research brings together the academic expertise of the supervisors in social entrepreneurship and research methods, and combines this with the expertise and experience of members of staff in UnLtd as the leading provider of support to social entrepreneurs in the UK and arbiter of the largest social enterprise network in the world. The PhD student will also benefit from excellent research training offered by the Business School and the SEDTC alongside the opportunity to be part of a vibrant research community that shapes agendas of scholarship and practice.Applications for the studentship are invited from suitably qualified UK/EU citizens.
